PLANTERS TROLLEY CARDS
AND CARDBOARD SIGNS

In nearly 40 years collecting Planters Peanut items, I've seen dozens of trolley cards and cardboard signs. Other than going by remembering how many times I've seen one, there has been no good way to judge a sign's rarity. I would like to address this problem with a series of articles and photographs, to show as many of them as possible. I invite all those who visit the Peanut Pals website to contact me
or the website if you have one of these signs in your collection or any other Planters Peanut trolley cards and cardboard signs you may have in your collection.
It is my hope that this co-operative effort will give everyone to see some great trolley cards and give all collectors of these great items a better sense of their variety and relative rarity.

As a side note, this article and the accompanying photos are reprinted from "old" issues of the Peanut Pals club newsletter, the "Peanut Papers". As a Peanut Pal club member, you gain access to this type of Planters collectors information. Consider joining Peanut Pals. Check the website for an application.

Card 1 - is a rare American trolley card, that I have only seen once, It comes from the fantastic collection of Van Benedick. It measures 11" x 21", which is the standard size for these signs.
As it refers to "When you step off this car", it is clearly from the era of trolley cars. The bag featured can be seen in Planters ads from 1925. I have found that old ads, while not as popular as other items with many collectors, are a very valuable resource in dating Planters items. Though the figure of Mr. Peanut has changed many times over the packaging of product usually seen in ads, was much more frequent, I would date this trolley card from 1922-1925.

Card 2 - is a Canadian trolley card sign.  I have seen two of these. It measures 11" x 21", which is the standard size for these signs. Mr. not quite American looking, the spelling of "Favourite" and the French "Buerre D' Arachides" on the peanut butter jar give away its' identity as Canadian. The peanut butter jar featured, with Mr. Peanut in an oval, and the cocktail peanuts can suggest a date from the 1940's, as does the glassine bag and not a cellophane bag.

Card 3 - is an American trolley card sign.  I have seen two of these. It measures 11" x 21", which is the standard size for these signs. It is unusual in that is an actual offer for premiums "Hollywood Bracelets", rather than an ad for Planters products. The figure of Mr. Peanut is nearly identical (albeit reversed) to that on the back cover of the coloring book, copyright 1950 "Seeing The USA With Mr. Peanut". I would therefore date this card from 1948 to 1950.
